Q&A with Dr. Liss, OB-GYN

Is there a special menopause diet I should be following?

During menopause, it's all about nourishing your body. There's no "magic bullet" menopause diet. The building blocks of good menopause nutrition should include all food groups. Prioritize protein, fiber, fruits and veggies, and healthy fats that support your body's needs. Instead of cutting out foods, try adding small, consistent changes that can enhance your nutrition. Always chat with your healthcare provider before making any big diet changes.

What are signs perimenopause is ending?

As perimenopause winds down, you might notice your symptoms improving. This can include infrequent or absent periods, fewer hot flashes and night sweats, less frequent mood swings, and better sleep. After your final period, symptoms usually continue to improve over the next 2+ years, though some, like genital, sexual, and urinary issues, might need ongoing treatment.

What are the common symptoms of menopause?

Some common symptoms of menopause include hot flashes and night sweats, mood swings, sleep problems, vaginal dryness, and fatigue. Your body is going through a major shift, and for some people, these symptoms are part of the process.

What causes menopause?

Menopause is caused by a natural and gradual decline in the reproductive hormones made by the ovaries, specifically estrogen and progesterone. This hormonal shift, which usually happens between the ages of 45-55, is what causes many of the symptoms we associate with menopause.

How long does menopause typically last?

The entire menopausal transition can last up to 7-14 years, but it varies from person to person. Factors like race, BMI, medical history (like smoking), and the age when menopause starts can all influence how long the transition lasts for you.

Can menopause hormone therapy (MHT) improve menopause symptoms?

Menopause hormone therapy (MHT) can be a game-changer for menopause symptoms, including hot flashes and night sweats. It adds back a small amount of hormones, which can improve your quality of life. However, MHT is not right for everyone, so it’s crucial to discuss the pros and cons with your healthcare provider.

Can menopause products help with vaginal dryness?

Yes, menopause products can definitely help with vaginal dryness. Look for lubricants and moisturizers. These products can provide relief and improve your quality of life. If you’re dealing with persistent dryness, a healthcare provider can recommend additional treatments.
